How to be yourself in front of the camera?? When it comes to Senior Portraits or any type of portrait photography for that matter, there’s one thing that can make or break a session – authenticity. The camera has a unique way of revealing our true selves, but it often comes with the pressure to pose, smile, and to look perfect. We all want to look perfect on camera and not feel awkward, but how do we do this? We are all not trained models or a celebrity with cameras in our face all day. So, how can you be yourself in front of the camera and ensure your personality shines through in your portraits? This write can be a savior in helping you fell more comfortable in front of the camera and let your real self shine through!
The Pressure of Perfection
We’ve all been there – standing in front of a camera, feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety. What the hell do I do with my hands? Is my hair OK? Is my makeup messed up?? What are people gonna think when they look at these photos?? Is this instagram worthy???
The pressure to look flawless in today’s society can be overwhelming, social media has taught us that it more important to be perfect and to be “liked”, instead of being ourselves. It begs the question, “what is perfect anyway??” Who is to say what perfection is when it comes to people? Is it celebrities? the latest YouTube influencer? It’s all opinion. Here’s MY opinion – what is perceived as perfection isn’t authentic. The most captivating portraits often embrace imperfections! We are all “not perfect” but we are all PERFECTLY UNIQUE which is what makes us, US. And the real you is what makes for an AUTHENTIC photo. That is How to be yourself in front of the camera.
Embrace Your Imperfections
The first step in being yourself in front of the camera is to embrace your imperfections. Those freckles, scars, or even your fashion sense is what makes you unique – they’re part of your story and a huge part of who you are. Instead of concealing them, let them shine through. They tell a tale of your life’s journey, and that’s what makes you beautifully human. You are perfectly imperfect and that is amazing. Let is all shine through!
Relax, Breathe, and Shake it off!
The key to authenticity in portraits is relaxation. When you’re tense or self-conscious, it shows. The camera wont lie and their is no amount of photoshop editing that will take tension out of a photo. Take a deep breath, exhale, and let go.. Shake off any tension you have. The more relaxed you are, the more natural and genuine your expressions will be.
Forget the Forced Smile
Forced smiles rarely look genuine. Try to think of something that genuinely makes you smile or laugh. Think of a funny memory, a joke, or imagine how it will make you feel when you look back on these photos and realize that you absolutely crushed your portrait session – whatever it takes to bring out a real smile. Your eyes will light up, and your smile will radiate authenticity. Sometimes having a friend or family member at your session can really help, especially someone who is known to make you laugh your ass off. If anything having them there for encouragement will be surely make you smile 🙂
Be Present in the Moment
To be yourself in front of the camera, focus on being present in the moment. Forget about how you look or what the outcome of that shot is going to be. Instead, LIVE IN THE MOMENT with yourself, your photographer and enjoy the experience. Interact with your photographer, your surroundings and let your you will see how easy it is to go with flow of the session.
The Role of Your Photographer
A skilled photographer plays a crucial role in capturing authenticity. A photographer who values candid moments, understands your personality, and creates an environment where you can be yourself is crucial. A photographer’s ability to connect with you can make all the difference in the final result.
Confidence in your wardrobe
Your outfit can significantly impact how you feel not only in front of the camera, but on any given day. Ever put on a pair of jeans that fit just right and you know you look amazing them? Or an old T-Shirt that you have had for years but makes you feel so comfortable?? You want to have that feeling on camera so choose clothing that matches your style and makes you feel amazing. No need to go over the top and where a suit and tie for your session if you normally wear jeans and sneakers. Above all, Choose cloting that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Whether it’s your favorite jeans and a cozy sweater or a stunning dress, wear something that reflects your style and personality.
Trust the Process
Finally, trust the process. Your photographer is there to capture the real you, and their guidance and expertise are invaluable. Trust in their ability to highlight your authenticity and tell your unique story!
Be yourself, YOU GOT THIS!
In the world of portrait photography, authenticity is key. A photo of your true self is far more fun to look at throughout the years than any forded smile, awkwardly posed photograph taken in front of a generic backdrop.. It might seem easier said than done, but embrace your imperfections, relax, and allow your genuine emotions to flow. YOU GOT THIS!
